Boasting some fantastic local activities, there’s something to suit everyone, and we guarantee you’ll never be short of ideas with this week long guide. Check out our guide to creating the perfect Easter break in the Shropshire Hills…
Day One – Carding Mill Valley & The Long Mynd
Kick start your Easter break with a relaxing hike at Carding Mill Valley and The Long Mynd. The stunning wildlife-rich heather-covered hills cover up to 2000 hectares of stunning Shropshire Hills countryside, boasting magnificent views across this stunning Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Drive, cycle, walk or ride on horseback to the top of Long Mynd, and look out for fifty miles in every direction. If you’re not feeling up to the long hike, you could simply watch the beautiful birdlife, play in the stream, relax with a picnic, or try your hand at pond dipping.
Day Two – Ludlow Castle
Head on over to Ludlow Castle for some good ol’ fashioned family fun this Easter. Walk through the grounds of one of England’s finest medieval ruins and gain a fascinating insight into the lives of kings, queens, princes, judges, and nobility. The castle is also hosting a very special Easter Dragon Hunt throughout the holidays! The dragon’s eggs have hatched, and the castle needs your help to find the baby dragons. Collect letters along the way to discover the dragon’s name and collect your prize of a delicious chocolate lolly.
Day Three – Montgomery
We highly recommend a visit to the magical Montgomery, our nearest town here at Moonrise Lodges. This beautiful Georgian market town boasts a 13th Century castle, quaint market square, an award-winning brewery, and plenty of independent shops, cafés, pubs, and restaurants. Admire stunning views across the county from the castle, walk along the section of Offa’s Dyke that passes just outside the town, or cycle along one of the five routes to discover truly spectacular Welsh border countryside.
Day Four – Iron Bridge Gorge Museums
Discover ten award-winning museums spread across the valley beside the majestic River Severn. Experience 19th Century British life at the Blists Hill Victorian Town or conduct some hands-on science experiments at Enginuity. The Jackfield Tile Museum is hosting a bunch of Easter Tile Decorating Workshops on selected days throughout the holidays. Learn the Victorian tube-lining technique to outline your tile design, before filling the gaps with a beautiful coloured glaze. The tile is then fired in one of the 1030˚C kilns and will be ready to collect a few days later.
Day Five – Hawkstone Park Follies
Set in 100 acres of picturesque parkland, Hawkstone Follies is a historic woodland fantasy jam-packed full of cliffs, crags, caves, woods, and extraordinary monuments. As one of the most visited landscapes in the UK during the 19th Century, kids and adults alike can explore caves, find dragons and trolls, venture across bridges, climb towers and run wild! They have promised a new Easter Trail for 2022, with details to be announced soon. Keep checking their Facebook page for further announcements.
Day Six – Fly Fishing & Wild Swimming
We have our very own private lake just a 5-minute stroll from our two luxury lodges; retreat to the lakeside and spend quality time with your friends or family, whilst indulging in a spot of fly fishing, wild swimming, playing hide and seek in the trees, making dens, or just bobbing around in the rowing boat. Perched on the edge of the lake is a rustic fishing lodge, equipped with electric heaters, camping chairs and a camping stove. Enjoy sitting beside the lake with a cup of tea and a good book, and watch the world go by…
Day Seven – Powis Castle
Finish off your holiday with a fun family trip to Powis Castle and Gardens. This medieval castle was built around 1200, perched high on a rock above its world-renowned gardens. The castle’s Clive Museum is home to one of the UK’s most important collections of Indian objects, making for a fascinating day out. They are hosting an exciting Easter Egg Hunt throughout the holidays – explore the family-friendly trail and complete 10-nature inspired activities along the way. Finish the trail and collect your special Rainforest Alliance chocolate egg at the end!
