Searching for a cycling holiday in the Shropshire Hills? You’ve come to the right place!
Moonrise Lodges’ two luxury lodges are set on a family farm in the Shropshire Hills, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The Shropshire Hills are best explored by bike, as cars take second place to tractors and cyclists in this picturesque rural area. Miles away from the motorways, our beautiful county has remained largely natural and unspoilt, with little traffic. Factor in the fantastic scenery and high standard of pub grub, it’s not surprising that the Shropshire Hills have become a mecca for cyclists!
Cycle through quiet country lanes as they meander through gentle valleys or climb up sweeping hills and be rewarded with amazing views. Whether you’re seeking a gentle cycle or a challenging hill climb, we highly recommend getting out and exploring Shropshire on two wheels…
Shropshire boasts a plethora of cycling trails and tracks, suitable for all ages, preferences, and abilities.
If you like circular routes, the county’s market towns are a great place to start, with several circular routes originating from each town. Each town has a distinct charm and character, from the medieval jewel that is Ludlow, to the ‘Little Switzerland’ of Church Stretton – named so because from here, cyclists can brave one of Britain’s most iconic road climbs, the Burway.
For cyclists seeking flat routes, Shropshire is jam-packed full of meandering rivers, canals, and lakes to explore on two wheels. Shropshire’s very own Lake District near Ellesmere is ideal for families seeking relaxed rides. Explore the River Severn from Shrewsbury, Ironbridge or Bridgnorth, or the Llangollen canal from Ellesmere, Whitchurch, or Market Drayton.
If you prefer a more challenging cycle, the unsigned Shropshire Cycleway follows the perimeter of the county. Experienced tourers can explore this 185-mile route and take in the county’s magnificent scenery from the fascinating and varied country border.
Here at Moonrise Lodges, you will find many cycle routes situated close by. Check out our recommended list of trails and tracks below…

This 11.5-mile attractive valley route follows quiet, country roads, taking you past Llandyssil and into Abermule. The ride is relatively easy once you’ve climbed the sharp hill out of Montgomery, eventually rewarding you with spectacular views over the Kerry Ridgeway, Montgomery Town Hill and Corndon. We highly recommend heading to The Abermule Inn for that much-needed pit stop of a cold beer and light lunch.
3. Church Stretton: To the Edge
This 13-mile circular trek from Church Stretton takes in the beautiful surrounding countryside, visiting popular attractions such as the Acton Scott Working Farm and Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre. With challenging gradients in some places, you can explore the dramatic landscapes of the Church Stretton hills from the comfort of your saddle. At the end of a long cycle, reward yourself with a cold beer at The King’s Arms, The Bucks Head or The Old Coppers Malt House.
4. Abermule and Bettws Cedewain
